DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY

Our state-of-the-art and fully portable IDEXX Digital Radiography(DR) system allows the veterinarians of Strain Equine Services to give our clients and patients on the farm results, which saves valuable time and money. This system gives us the best image in the industry in less than 6 seconds. We can take a digital x-ray of the patient’s injury or area of concern without waiting precious minutes to develop film. This allows us to know instantly whether we have a good view of the target area or if we need to take another view. Our Idexx DR system helps us make a more rapid and confident diagnosis. This means we can start treating your horse sooner, which generally results in a faster and more positive outcome.

Peak Pulse Performance Therapy = P-3

This machine has shown remarkable results for horses with back, sacroiliac, and gluteal muscle problems. It is also effective on cases with chronic and acute laminitis and cases that previously were resistant to other forms of treatment. P3 therapy is proving very beneficial in alleviating pain, increasing range of motion, and is speeding the healing of many types of injuries. Generally, it is administered a minimum of 3 times for up to 20 minutes per treatment. Although the exact science behind the results is unknown, we believe that it produces an analgesic effect and increases blood flow to the affected area. It has shown in human sports medicine practice to be safe with no adverse side effects reported.

FOCUSED SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

SES was the first equine clinic in Kansas City to offer this specialized equipment to our horses. It is a non-invasive procedure with an average treatment time of 20-30 minutes. Shockwave therapy is used for tendon and ligament injuries and to stimulate bone remodeling. Focused high frequency shockwave therapy consists of a single acoustic pulse of extremely short rise time and a very high pressure maximum, which expends enormous amounts of acoustic energy focused on a small area. The surrounding tissue is treated as gently as possible. Shockwave therapy increases new bone formation and cuts down on healing time.

The indications for use include, but are not limited to:

Tendonopathies with or without calcification

Calcification of the nuchal ligaments

Splint bone fractures

Sesamoiditis

Sacroiliac disease

Sore Back

Insertion desmopathies

Anthropathies

Deforming arthritis of the limb joints

Navicular disease

Stricture of the annular ligament

Exostosis

Degenerative Suspensories

IN-HOUSE LABORATORY SERVICES

Our lab is capable of performing complete blood counts, blood chemistries, electrolytes, blood gases, fecal egg counts, fluid analysis, cytology, culture and sensitvities. These results are generally available within 1-3 hours. Results can be faxed to the referring veterinarian upon request. Having our own laboratory also saves time and money and allows us to start treatment faster.

CORRECTIVE, PERFORMANCE AND GERIATRIC DENTISTRY

Equine dentistry is essential in the health, and performance of your horse. Being proactive and having your horse’s mouth checked on an annual basis can save you money, as well as prevent potentially serious mouth or dental problems. The examination of your horse’s mouth is evaluated in several ways;

  • The tongue is pulled to either side of the mouth to evaluate the wear of the premolars and molars.
  • The temporal-mandibular joint (TMJ or Jaw Joint) is palpated to determine if there is pain or discomfort in or around the joint. This may explain abnormal emastication (chewing), riding problems, or a particular side that may need to be investigated further.
  •  The incisors (front teeth) are held together to evaluate if one side is deviating further then the other. Hooks can also develop which can prevent side to side motion.

Sedation is very important in the complete evaluation and treatment of your horse’s mouth for a few reasons:

  • It allows the veterinarian to safely place the full mouth speculum into your horse’s mouth. Making it safer for everyone including the horse.
  • It allows the veterinarian to do a full visual inspection and digital manipulation of each tooth and soft tissue structures in the mouth.
  • It provides the horse with a degree of tranquility while the use of the swiss-power dental equipment is utilized throughout the mouth. The dremel tool is used to provide your horse with a “bit seat”. Where the 2 upper premolars and the 2 lower premolars are rounded to allow the bit to fit better.

At Strain Equine Services we prefer the Capps "dremmel style" power floating equipment. We do this for 2 reasons:

  1. It causes less trauma then some other forms of power dentistry
  2. Horses do not seem to mind this form of power equipment because it tends to be a little quieter than some of the other conventional methods of power equipment.

Tooth wear is dependant on several factors:

  • Age and breed of the horse
  • Loose or missing teeth
  • Abnormal emastication (chewing) due to trauma, abscesses, tumors, or arthritis in the temporal mandibular joint.
  •  Conformation or abnormal occlusion between the upper and lower tooth arcade.
  • Diet (Hay vs. pasture, pellet vs. whole grains).

All of these problems can contribute to riding or behavior issues (e.g. head tossing, circling better in one way compared to the other, or excessive chewing or salivating with the bit), nutritional or weight problems, emastication (chewing) issues (e. g. Grain or hay falling out of the mouth).

If any of these are noticed or you may think that your horse has a mouth or tooth issue please feel free to contact Dr. Strain to schedule an appointment or to discuss your horse with him

Interleukin-1 Antagonist Protein = IRAP

IRAP stands for Interleukin-1-Receptor Antagonist Protein. 50cc of the horse’s blood is aseptically drawn in a syringe containing hundreds of glass beads. The blood is then incubated for 24 hours where it is then centrifuged to separate the red blood cells. The end result is a "soup" containing high quantities of IRAP and other natural anti-inflammatory cells. IRAP blocks the IL-1 receptors, thereby protecting cartilage surfaces and decreasing inflammation. Treatment protocols vary from horse to horse and problem to problem. However, typically from 3-5 injections per week is necessary. IRAP can also be stored for up to 12-18 months and can be shipped across the country if needed. Studies have shown significant decreases in lameness. IRAP is one of the best treatment regimes for degenerative joint disease (Arthritis) in the horse.

Tiludronate (Tildren®)

Tiludronate has been used all over the world over the past 10 years in the treatment of equine lameness. It is a bisphosphate type compound which is used to:

·        inhibits bone resorption by blocking activity of osteoclasts

·        increases bone density

·        inhibits secretion of enzymes that degrade the cartilage on joint surfaces

·        mild anti-inflammatory properties

Studies have shown that it has been used effectively in treating lameness in horse suffering from navicular disease, kissing spine disease and hock disease (bone spavin).

Tiludronate is currently in the final stages of getting FDA approval in the USA.

This promising and easily administered intravenous product can also be used to help accelerate the healing process of some types of bone-soft tissue attachment issues, as well as some types of non- displaced fractures or deep bone issues.

Distal attachment of the Deep Digital Flexor tendon (DDFT)

Impars ligament

Suspensory ligament avulsion/desmitis (distal and proximal)

Distal sesamoidean ligament attachment

Bone Edema

Chronic heel pain

Tiludronate can also be used in conjunction with other treatment modalities that Strain Equine Services has to offer.

PRP - Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelets are what causes clotting. Platelets in blood contain growth factors that stimulate cells in injured tissue to begin healing and draws new cells into the injured area. Blood is drawn from the patient and centrifuged to separate the white and red blood cells for removal and to concentrate the platelets in the plasma to four to five times that of whole blood. The entire process takes less than an hour to perform. The platelet-rich plasma is then injected at the site of the injury. Injection of PRP is recommended for both recent tendon and ligament injuries and those injuries that have not healed using traditional rest and controlled exercise. When PRP is injected into damaged tendon or ligament, cells in the tissue along with new cells circulating in the blood are stimulated to reproduce new cells at the site of injury. These healing cells work to increase the formation of new blood vessels (neovascularization) and connective tissue, all of which encourages natural repair of the injury. PRP is used to help initiate cell response, so that the normal healing process is stimulated and can proceed. As such, a PRP treatment can be particularly helpful in cases where the healing process has stalled. This treatment helps assure that the injury is completely healed and that the risk of re-injury is lessened. Platelet-Rich Plasma can be used as a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with other therapies, including stem cell therapy, shock wave treatments and surgery.
